Visa and K-ETA to travel to South Korea: what you need to know

Before travelling to South Korea, one of the first questions is whether you need a visa or any permit. Here is a clear summary, although you should always confirm the latest official information before your trip, as these rules can change.
Do you need a visa?
For short tourist stays, citizens of many countries (including Spain and most of the EU) do not need a visa to enter South Korea. An agreement allows tourist entry for a limited number of days without a visa.
If your trip is for other reasons (work, study, long stays), the conditions are different and may require a specific visa.
What the K-ETA is
The K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) is an electronic travel authorization, similar to the US ESTA. You apply online before flying, and it is intended for travellers from visa-exempt countries.
One important detail: the Korean authorities have temporarily waived the K-ETA for several countries at different times as a measure to encourage tourism. That is why it is essential to check the current status before your trip:
- If the K-ETA is waived for your case, you can enter without applying.
- If it is in force, you must apply in advance (not at the last minute).
How to check and apply
- Always check the official K-ETA website and the Korean consulate information before travelling.
- If you do need to apply, do it with several days to spare, not the night before.
- Have your valid passport ready (with enough validity) and your accommodation details.
Other useful documents
- Passport valid for the whole trip.
- Proof of accommodation and sometimes of your departure flight.
- Travel insurance is highly recommended, though not always mandatory.
