Travelling to South Korea in summer 2026: beaches, mountains and tips

Summer is one of the liveliest times to visit South Korea, though also one of the most demanding when it comes to weather. If you are thinking of travelling in July or August 2026, here is what you need to know to enjoy it without surprises.

What Korean summer weather is like

Korean summer is hot and humid. Temperatures sit around 28 to 33 degrees, with a sticky feel from the humidity. On top of that, from late June to mid-July comes the rainy season, the jangma, with heavy but brief downpours.

Nothing to fear: with a little planning, summer is a great time to go. The trick is to mix city with coast and mountains.

The best beaches and islands

When the heat hits, Koreans head to the sea. These are the top choices:

• Busan: the great coastal city. The Haeundae and Gwangalli beaches are the quintessential summer plan, lively well into the night.
• Jeju Island: the "island of the gods". Turquoise beaches, the Hallasan volcano and waterfalls. Perfect for 3 or 4 days.
• Sokcho and the east coast: quieter beaches and access to Seoraksan National Park.

Escapes from the heat

If the city humidity gets too much, Korea has natural refuges:

• National parks like Seoraksan or Jirisan, cooler at altitude and with spectacular trails.
• Mountain temples, where you can even spend a night in a templestay programme.
• Rivers and valleys inland, ideal for a restful day.

What to pack

• Light, breathable clothing, plus a thin long sleeve for air conditioning (it is powerful in Korea).
• A folding umbrella or rain jacket for the jangma showers.
• Sun cream, a cap and a reusable bottle.
• Comfortable shoes if you plan to combine city and nature.

Tips for 2026

• Book trains and accommodation ahead: August is high season for Koreans too, and beach areas fill up.
• KTX tickets to Busan or the coast sell out on summer weekends. Best to lock them in early.
