How to buy KTX train tickets in Korea from abroad

The KTX is the fastest and most comfortable way to travel around South Korea. It connects Seoul and Busan in a little over two and a half hours, and reaches almost every major city. The trouble starts when you try to buy the tickets from abroad: what should be simple often turns into a headache.

The official KORAIL website and the Korail Talk app are built for residents in Korea, not for international travellers. The most common obstacles are:

• Payment fails with foreign cards. Many cards are declined at checkout with no explanation.
• The app asks for a Korean phone number to verify the account at certain steps.
• The English interface is limited and confusing, especially when choosing times, classes and discounts.
• Popular trains sell out, particularly on weekends, public holidays and during festivals.
