The best time to visit South Korea (month by month)
South Korea is a country of four very distinct seasons, and each one offers a different experience. There is no single "best time": it depends on what you want to see and how you handle heat and cold. Here is a season by season guide to help you decide.
Spring (March to May): cherry blossom
Along with autumn, this is the most popular season. In late March and early April the cherry blossom (beotkkot) blooms across the country, starting in the south. The weather is mild and pleasant.
- Upside: stunning scenery, comfortable temperatures.
- Keep in mind: it is high season, so book accommodation and trains ahead.
Summer (June to August): heat, beaches and festivals
Korean summer is hot and humid, with a rainy season (jangma) between late June and July. It is a good time for the coast and islands like Jeju, and for music festivals.
- Upside: vibrant atmosphere, beaches, festivals.
- Keep in mind: high humidity and the chance of heavy rain.
Autumn (September to November): red leaves
For many, the best season. Clear skies, pleasant temperatures and red and golden foliage (danpung) across mountains and temples. October is ideal.
- Upside: perfect weather, postcard scenery, great for cultural hikes.
- Keep in mind: also high season.
Winter (December to February): snow and skiing
Cold and dry, with snow in the north and the mountains. This is the season for skiing and snowy scenes at temples and palaces.
- Upside: fewer tourists, lower prices, skiing.
- Keep in mind: it gets quite cold, especially in January.
So, when should you go?
- For cherry blossom: late March to early April.
- For the best weather and autumn scenery: October.
- For fewer crowds and better prices: winter or early summer.
